From the Tamaram Temple Trustees/Committee Members 1. It is with great regret that we have closed the Tamaram Temple. 2. We also have had to close the committee, the Trust, Charitable Status & bank account. 3. The remaining funds and property will be sent to the Wat Mahathat at Kings Bromley, Birmingham as stated in our trust document. It is very sad that we have to do this as the Temple was becoming established & providing a valuable service to a widening community, indicating there is a demand for a Temple in Plymouth. There are several reasons for the closure: 1. The treasurer has had to resign for health reasons, this announcement prompted most of the rest of the committee to offer their resignation, no-one came forward who would inspire the confidence & trust of the Thai community, to replace them. *So there is no viable committee/trustees. 2. We only have a contract to rent Powderham Rd until the 28th December 2013 when the owner may want to sell the property, but due to planning problems we have to cease using the house as an active Temple straightaway. *So we have no building. 3. The other committee members that offered their resignation did so for several reasons, but the primary reason was the unacceptable behaviour of the main resident monk – Ajan Sommnuk He was ordered to return to Kings Bromley by Ajan Laow. *So we have no monk. The trust has never interfered with the religious side of the Temple, but has confined itself to paying the bills, dealing with the running of the property and fundraising. If anyone wanted details of bill paying and fundraising they only had to ask – no one has. From when we first had a facebook page, the treasurer posted that anyone wanting copies of bank statements or committee details had only to send their email address – no one has. The amounts of larger donations and fundraising event totals were regularly posted on facebook. The members of the Committee, who are also the Trustees, have worked hard to raise funds, find a premises, organise the day to day running of the Temple & sort out all the bureaucracy required. None of us have been paid, but we have given of our time willingly for what we considered was a very worthwhile cause. Some of the Trustees have been prepared to be ‘out of pocket’ to the tune of hundreds of pounds & many, many hours work. There have been various rumours and gossip circulating in Plymouth, but their exact nature is unknown to us, as none of the people involved have had the courage to come forward and make any accusation. It seems it was easier for such people to destroy what we were trying to build, than it was to join us in order to ensure its success. Finally can we say a very heartfelt thanks to the people of Plymouth, Devon, Cornwall & elsewhere who gave so generously to the Temple.
