From the There he goes again files: I think about veterans issues probably a bit more than the average bear, so when I hear about companies and corprations doing employment drives for veterans, I like to check in once in a while. Although its been my experience that most employers (thankfully) give hiring preference to military veterans, I have to say that Im pretty disappointed with companies like Wal Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, Office Max etc... who frequently advertise that they are looking to put warriors to work. The problem I have with that is that these companies barely pay above minimum wage. While I appreciate the sentiment of offering a job to any vet that wants one, I cant help but feel that low pay, low skill positions are demeaning to someone who has been highly trained, IS highly skilled and has shown a willingness to put his/her life on the line for this country and these very businesses who apparently think that we are only worth $8 an hour. Its pretty sad that theres more incentive and its far more lucrative to draw unemployment and apply for food stamps than it is to take what could very well be a corporate tax write-off of an offer to put heroes to work after military service...
