From the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum: Sixty-nine years ago today, on January 27, 1945, the Soviet army entered Auschwitz and liberated the more than 7,000 prisoners who remained there. Of the 1.3 million people deported to Auschwitz over the course of the war, it is estimated that 1.1 million were murdered. Today, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, calls on us to remember the lives of those who perished, and reflect as a community on the horrors of the Holocaust.
