From the comments section of the Herald: Becoming independent is all about being, not the best, but the best you can be in a particular context. The context being a self determining small nation that puts the needs of every citizen first in a bid for equality and social justice. For example does the electorate of Scotland; wish to be the best at projecting military power across the planet via trident and an aggressive foreign policy stance ... or lead by peaceful example, providing humanitarian aid, good council and logistical support to those in need whilst maintaining an appropriate defence force at home to deal with the threats that exist in the modern world. seek to dominate the world financial industry and provide the highest salaries possible for bankers ... or create a system of green and ethical banking that separates the riskier areas of investment from everyday banking governed by appropriate regulation. provide healthcare at the least possible expense to the government by farming out large sections of the NHS to private companies, creating a two tier system where those that can pay are ensured the best possible care whilst those that cannot face delays and becoming indebted to cover costs for treatment and prescriptions ... or a state owned NHS that provides an indentical service to every citizen free at the point of use. The list goes on and on. This referendum is asking the people of Scotland to think about their priorities and about the type of country that they want in future. Some will be dazzled by Westminsters show of strength and size, or indeed intimidated by it, and vote No. Others will see the opportunities independence offers to transform Scotland - to be the best possible nation for each and every citizen - and they will vote Yes. - Steve McKay, Sweden.
