From the inbox - From Anonymous: To the Citizens of Little River County and Surrounding areas: A letter to: Little River County Judge Clayton Castleman and the Board of Directors for Little River Health Systems; Larry Davis, Judy Adams, Robert Dennis, Perry Young, Dale Sansom, Debbie Pounds, and Dorothy Henderson. We just wanted to take this opportunity to write about what is going on with Little River Memorial Hospital and Little River Health Systems as a whole. The hospital was built in 1958 and has been an integral part of Little River County ever since. The original nursing home was built around that same time and, within the last few years we have been able to build a new facility. We also offer home health and hospice services along with outpatient therapy. We have had some great doctors and staff throughout the years. We have provided care, in some form or fashion, to some part of your family during that time. Little River Health Systems employs approximately 215 employees. Little River Memorial Hospital employs approximately 80. Hospital Home Health, Hospice, and Little River Clinic have approximately 50 employees, with the nursing home rounding out the number. Today, we are in a crisis. Due to Medicare changes, internal strife, and other situations, the hospital is in trouble. In the past it wasn’t unheard of to have a daily census of 12+ inpatients. There were many times the hospital was full to capacity. Due to petty physician conflicts, EMS preferences, and plain choices from the residences of Little River County, our daily census has been averaging 4 or less patients for the past couple of years. It has put the hospital in a financial bind. Many things are being done and have been done to try and correct that problem. Some of those corrections are not fair to the employees affected.
