From the intro to my Political Sociology syllabus: This course - TopicsExpress

From the intro to my Political Sociology syllabus: This course will investigate the ways that culture, social organization, institutions and economic power influence the political system. We will be focusing primarily on the similarities and differences between American political life and that of other industrialized countries. Our goal is to interrogate, explore and grapple with the notion that the US is a unique nation, a concept known in social science and historiography as “American Exceptionalism”. In addition, this class will invite students to think about their own roles and positions in the politics that surround them. There will be an emphasis in assignments and lectures on political literacy and constructing a personal-political “autobiography”. This will be a reading and writing-heavy course, with four major books as well as additional articles that students will be expected to read and work with throughout the quarter.
