From this weeks 2CC church newsletter: Ever since word got out about his sudden death on Monday, comedian Robin Williams has been all over the news--tributes, analysis, even some backlash. The circumstances were tragic, as Williams had been battling episodes of severe depression for many years, as well as periods of addiction. As someone who knew him only from t.v. and the movies, Im left pondering how someone whose performances crackled with such a joyful, maniacal intensity could privately be battling such darkness. I dont know that I needed reminding, but nevertheless, I am reminded how sometimes, daily life can be such a struggle, even when from the outside, everything seems to be going someones way. Im also reminded that when it is a struggle for someone, he or she may be working mightily and putting up a much braver front than we may ever realize. But its also true that all to often, we dont try to look very closely or listen very carefully. We run into someone as were zooming from one thing to another, and maybe we say how are you?....but the fact is, we dont actually wait for much of an answer. Or we cheerily say, So whats new?....which is guaranteed to keep things comfortable, superficial, and tidy. Surely, we would like to have time for more. Its just that we dont have it. But the fact is, humanity doesnt come in the precise serving sizes were looking for. Humanity is not convenient that way. Thank God it isnt. Thats what makes living in community rewarding--and also unbelievably hard ALL THE TIME. But in my book, were not just vaguely the better for it. Sometimes its our messy humanity that is the only thing that saves us from ourselves--because the parts that dont fit but wont stay hidden and silent demand something more from those who say they notice and care. Would a listening ear over a cup of coffee have saved Robin Williams? Depression is a lot more complicated than that. But I believe that all of us long to be known for who we truly are, and not simply for the pleasing and easy parts of us. The more we make room for the reality of struggle and challenge and even anguish within each and among all of us, the more quickly healing and hope will begin to reemerge--especially from the people who find the hurting and say, Yes...me too. And a world where we ask each other how were doing...and offer real attention to a genuine answer...seems like its one big step closer to the world that Jesus taught us to seek and to build. See you in church,
