From tragedy ... to a blessing 31-year-old Houssam Hammoudi travelled more than 8,000 miles from Montreal, Canada to Ormoc City in Leyte which was hit by Typhoon Yolanda to check on his girlfriend Merry Grace Acojedo, 22. He had lost contact with her soon after the typhoon struck a year ago. He found her in a clinic in terrible shape – broken jaw, wrist and finger. She had deep cuts on her face and body. Her leg was in danger of amputation. It was like a fairy tale – Grace was saved from death by a knight in shining armour. They got married in the hospital where Grace was confined. Today, a year later, Grace is with Houssam in Montreal, Canada, where they have started a new life with Grace’s son, John. Houssam has taken over as John’s Dad. Grace says she looks after her two “boys” and prepares great food for them. Fop the family, tragedy has indeed turned into a blessing.
