Fun Fact Friday (National Park Week Edition)! Yesterday we featured Yellowstone but did you know that in the early 1900s scientists believed that Yellowstones geothermal features were dying? In 1918, Katmai National Park (AK) was established to protect a huge pyroclastic ash flow called The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. It was thought that the steaming vents of Katmai would be the next Yellowstone. Turns out they were wrong! Yellowstone is still active and the steaming vents of Katmai are gone.
