Fun story: do you know where the term horsepower came from? It was actually a marketing ploy. In 1764 James Watt drastically improved the steam engine. He needed to persuade the coal miners that his product was better. Thats when he made the case that his contraption could replace a whole team of horses! He calculated it took one minute for a horse to move 33,000 lbs one foot. Then he used his calculations to convince miners, enticing them with the idea of replacing horse labor with steam labor. If a machine boasts 1 horsepower, its strong enough to move 33k lbs a distance of one foot in one minute. His marketing plan worked! Watts steam engine would go on to power the industrial revolution and horses everywhere were fired! Enjoy your day Flagstaff :)
