Fun with Numbers! The first 13 days of August have produced the coldest average temperature in 25 years, and these same temperatures are the 6th coldest on record at the RDU airport. All of this prompted me to look at each month this summer, and how they compare to normal, which is defined as a 30 year average. The normals we use now are from the period 1981-2010, and will update in 2021 to make use of the period 1991-2020. So I thought I would look back at how the normals have changed over the last 4 decades, and how the summer months this year compare. We find that the normals, at least for the summer months are going up every 10 years, so our summer so far is below normal with respect to the 1981-2010 normals, but above normal with respect to the prior three 30-year periods. Does this cool weather necessarily mean a cool end to 2014? Check out Nate Johnsons blog at wral/cool-august-not-a-trend-for-coming-winter/13891037/ Greg Fishel
