Future of Smithfield Market remains unclear A report by Knight Frank has suggested that one proposal to save Londons Smithfield Market could make a multimillion-pound loss. The property agent said plans by Save Britains Heritage and the Victorian Society to refurbish the disused section of the meat market and create a bustling hub are clearly economically unviable. Knight Franks report is part of evidence that Henderson Global Investors - which owns the disused buildings at Smithfield and has a rival redevelopment scheme in mind - is submitting ahead of a public inquiry next month. Henderson said that its scheme was credible, funded and viable and would save three quarters of the historic buildings at Smithfield. Save Britain said that it had compiled its own expert research to show that its alternative should be considered. Roger Hepher, its planning expert witness, said that the artisan market proposal would suit the buildings very well, indeed and would give the local area a critical mass. The Times, Page: 42
