GKRM Newsletter: Restaurant Openings & Updates / Upcoming Events Chanukah Specials / Great Kosher Deals donates $2000 to charity Great Kosher Restaurants Magazine is a proud sponsor of this Sundays Chanukah @ The Nets, a Jewish Heritage Chanukah Themed Event which promises to be a lot of fun. Sunday, Dec. 21 / 5:30pm - Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY Free JHN T-shirt / Anthem Performed by Yanky Lemmer * Menorah Lighting Ceremony between 1st and 2nd Quarters / Rabbis vs. Teens Halftime Game To purchase tickets as low as $30, go to ift.tt/16wZlh9 Greetings! Wow, its been over 3 weeks since the last newsletter and boy, has a lot happened. If you participated in our Small Business Saturday promotion, you are well aware of what we have been busy with the last few weeks. With close to 7,000 transactions, we were overwhelmed and we thank you for that. All the certificates and future credit have been sent out so if you didnt get yours, please let us know. And because of your purchases, we were able to donate a total of $2,000 to two charities of victims families of the recent Har Nof tragedy in Israel as well as giving to Masbia, a local NY Soup Kitchen with 4 locations, who feed the poor and homeless. You should know that your money helped towards that cause and we look forward to donating again next year. Meanwhile, while my staff was filling orders, I was in Florida last week - filling orders myself after midnight. However, I was able to get the scoop and pulse of whats new and hot in the Sunshine State. I was able to go to 3 restaurant openings as well as the huge Miami Kosher Food and Wine Experience. You can see all the opening and event highlights below. And because there is so much already in this newsletter, were going to do a South Florida Restaurant preview next week. So stay tuned for that. But besides Florida, we have some really interesting restaurant news and updates from around the country and of course, we have several Chanukah restaurant specials. So from our family to yours, have a wonderful Chanukah and be sure to save a seat for me at the donut and latke table! We have learned from The Lo-Down that the 25 seat restaurant, with an outdoor space, will have an extensive menu that includes organic eggs prepared any way you like them, a salad bar, a sandwich bar with smoked fish, veggie bacon tomato and cheese skewers and several fresh fish entrees (including salmon, tuna and dorado). We will keep you updated as we learn more about the kosher cafe opening. BROOKLYN Breadsmith Finally Open for Business As Great Kosher Restaurants reported back in August on our Facebook page, Breadsmith, an artisinal bakery with locations across the United States, opened in Brooklyn on Tuesday December, 9 at 1817 Ave M. We can attest to the fact that the only thing better than their huge variety of breads are their incredible pastries such as melt in your mouth cinnamon buns and sweetrolls. Breadsmith features a 6 ton hearth oven, which will be baking their 30 plus varieties of bread including Ciabatta, Whole Wheat, Honey wheat, French Baguettes, 5 different types of Challah and so much more! They will have different varieties of specialty breads available daily. We encourage all of you to go in and try it. You can contact them at (718) 676-4747. Once you taste this artisanal bread, youll see what all the hype is about. To see their entire menu and a video we took during our exclusive tour click here. Gourmet Kosher Market to Open in Sheepshead Bay Great news for the residents and surrounding areas of Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn! The owners of Cherry Hill Gourmet Market on Ocean Avenue are opening a gourmet kosher market in the site of the former Richard Yees Restaurant at 2617 Avenue U. The location has sat empty since Yees closed in 2008 so were happy to see that a kosher establishment is taking its place. The inside of the restaurant is finally being gutted and the outside black paneling has been removed. Cherry Hill manager, Sam Nitka, explained to Sheepshead Bites that [Cherry Hill] will financially support it, and we believe theres a demand for it in the neighborhood. The currently unnamed store, which is expected to open in June or July 2015, will be Sabbath observant and will sell kosher certified me ats, packaged groceries, organic vegetables and more! The new market will also take over the former site of Shulmans Picture Framing on the corner and will likely have a small parking lot behind the property. Well keep you updated as we find out more about the opening. QUEENS Sushi Tokyo opens The 4th location of Sushi Tokyo has opened and its in Queens at 67-25 Main Street in Flushing. With two locations in Brooklyn and one in the 5 Towns this is their first restaurant in Queens. Something tells me their are more coming. They are offering 10% off all Sushi Platters in all their locations thro ughout Chanukah. 5 TOWNS Mikes Burgers takes over Burgers So what promises to be very confusing, it seems Burgers on Central Avenue has changed its name to Mikes Burgers. Ordinarily, that would not be big news but considering Mike Gershkovich of Mikess Bistro is set to open his Amsterdam Burger Company in the 5 Towns in 2015, you know people are going to think Mikes Burgers is his - although perhaps that is the reasoning behind the name of the new Mikes Burgers. Hmm. Grill560 takes over Noodles The previous owner of Burgers and who now owns Pizzale, is changing the Noodles restaurant he had before into a falafel and schwarma joint called Grill560. I know, a bit confusing, but lets see what happens with this location. FLORIDA 26: Sushi & Tapas opens in Surfside This is simply a really cool place! A combination of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine with beautiful white decor, plush seats, and complex and interesting menu is what will set this restaurant apart from any other restaurant in South Florida. Dairy based but heavy on fish and sushi, some samples from the menu are: Nikkei Hamachi Tacos, Nitro Faux Scallops, Acevichado Roll, Mock Shrimp Geisha and Tuna/Salmon/Hamachi Tartare. To see some pictures of our exclusive VIP pre-opener tasting click here. Backyard BBQ & Brew opens in Surfside We attended the pre-opener of Backyard (from the owners of Kosherica Cruises) last week and got a sneak peak and tasting of their menu. Backyard will do well because it has a lot of going for itself. The place is modern, yet rustic and homey. The comfort food style menu will be a big hit as will the reasonable prices. They are now officially opened, but to see the menu and exclusive pictures of the tasting, click here. Harbour Grill Deli comes to Miami Beach So this is kind of interesting. Harbour Grill, the popular steakhouse in Surfside, is opening a take-out store behind 41 Street, next door to Ocean Bank, off Royal Palm Avenue, in the beginning of January. The food will be cooked in their flagship restaurant and will be taken to the deli, where their counter will be offering weekday and Shabbat takeout as well as all kinds of cured and cooked deli meats, including house made Montreal smoked meat, smoked brisket, pastrami, mergez sandwiches, corizo, pressed veal bacon, and much more. Milts BBQ Truck coming to Miami They are heading to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area to scope out food trucks and kitchens. Theyre working towards getting the truck licensed and ready to serve in Florida for the winter. Stay tuned for more information and let your Floridian friends know! Rare Bistro Reopens After a Forced Closure Due to Water Damage Rare Bistro, the famed Miami Beach eatery, located in the Iconic Tower 41 building, which was forced to close a few months ago due to water damage, had their grand re-opening on Thursday night (we were there and click here to see our photos). They might call themselves a Bistro now, but the food is as good as it was for the last 5 years when they were officially called a steakhouse. Basically allthat has changed is that there is no more tablecloth, the prices have dropped and the place feels more family friendly. They still have candles on the table and the ambiance is very nice with high ceilings and a full lit bar. Judging by the new menu and its reasonable prices, its clear that Rare is back and better than ever! Click here to see their entire new menu. WINNEPEG (CANADA): Ber Max Caffe New kosher cafe opens - 1800 Corydon Avenue (204-691-0044) THAILAND Thailands First Kosher Hotel Opening Soon Luxury developers The Tulip Group announced the opening of Centara Avenue Hotel, the fourth property under the flagship of Centra Hotel and Resorts in Pattaya, Thailand in De cember. The hotel, which will be centrally located behind Pattaya Second Road, close to the Avenue shopping complex, will feature a full kosher restaurant, coffee shop, luxury appointed rooms, marble walled lobby, rooftop swimming pool and gymnasium and an onsite synagogue, which will cater to the ever growing tourist market from the Jewish community holidaying in Pattaya. I was totally blown away by the ambiance and decadence of this show. As I entered the room, it was apparent that this is a unique event unlike any other. Based on the comments and compliments of the attendants, it is clear that KFWM is here to stay ! Before I even entered the room, the smells of the food enticed me. The sounds of excitement as the patrons enjoyed the variety of wines that were showcased was constant . The 20 plus caterers outdid themselves with creative, innovative, and delectable treats. From Zak The Bakers herring NVodka to SoHos legendary beef sushi prepared to perfection, it was clear that the rave was warranted. Beef and chicken donuts courtesy of Rare catering were a unique twist on a seasonal treat. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not much of a dessert person, but when I spotted that Pral ine Cake Mouse, I knew I had to make room, and boy was it worth it!
