GAMBLING LADY (1934) PRECODE (194? Reissue poster) Directed by Archie Mayo, with Barbara Stanwyck, Joel McCrea, Pat OBrien. Barbara Stanwyck as a lady gambler named Lady Lee who gets into trouble with Joel McCrea and Pat OBrien. Here is another one of those films that one must use various sources to find accurate and correct information. First, here is a Precode film. It was released March 31, 1934. On or about July 1934 the Production Code Administration, known as the Hays Office, began to regulate, the content of Hollywood motion pictures. This films running time is 66 minutes. In the 1940s the film was reissued Proof That It’s Pre-Code One source said: The only copy I could find had the Production Code seal on it, so I may have been watching an edited version. That being said: *There’s a noble suicide and a noble divorce. *There’s an extramarital affair that gets forgiven awfully quickly. *Sheila (Claire Dodd) gambles with her jewelry against Lady Lee (Barbara Stanwyck), and keeps losing. Garry desperately tries to interject: Garry: “Are you ready to quit?” Sheila: “Not while I have three garments left!” *The villains pretty much get away with everything, their illegal machinations and murders unpunished. SO, which print were they watching?? ***To reissue a precode in the 1940s, film edits had to have been made- That could bring down the running time a great deal. **Clearly TCM Is airing the unedited PRECODE version. At 67min. (they found an extra minute!) *********FILM AIRS WEDNESDAY AM. *Make sure there is no production code at the beginning. (I am sure there wont be one.) Does the film seem racy? Give us your feedback. I am curious to know what they had to do to get this film in the theaters in the 40s.
