GANITO KAMI SA MAKATI ! UMAK STUDES WIN FIRST ASIA PACIFIC SUPPLY CHAIN COMPETITION IN SINGAPORE posted by : icrd on 09/18/2013 Three University of Makati (UMak) students comprising the Philippine team bagged the first place in the first-ever Asia Pacific Supply Chain Management Challenge held recently in Singapore. Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay congratulated Joanna Rose B. Chua, Loema A. Gicana and Hazel Jo P. Nicdao, all graduating students taking up Business Administration major in Supply Chain Management at the city-run university, for bringing pride and honor not only to the city but to the entire country. “We proudly congratulate these three exemplary students of the University of Makati who bested teams from other countries in the region. Their outstanding achievement substantiates the significant headway we have made in promoting a world-class public education system to produce globally competitive graduates,” Binay said. The mayor noted that among the six participating Asian countries, only the Philippines sent one team as representative, as the rest sent two teams each to compete in the challenge. With their research case entitled “Innovating on a Complex Logistics Distribution in Boracay”, the Philippine team bested Singapore, second place, and Indonesia, third place, and three other countries. The first Asia Pacific Supply Chain Management Challenge is a new portion during the Supply Chain Asia Forum (SCAF), an annual forum that began in 2006 and has since grown progressively into a regional event. University president Tomas Lopez said the UMAK students were coached and trained by Philippine Institute for Supply Management (PISM) director Marilyn Guzman. PISM is the industry partner of UMAK for its Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Supply Chain Management course program. Lopez said UMAK and PISM launched Asia’s first college degree program in purchasing and supply chain management in 2002. The course curriculum covers 13 major subjects and a total of 1,000 hours of OJT. The university head said the course aims to equip its graduates with a working knowledge of purchasing and supply chain management by transforming the classroom set-up into a training ground of students where trainers from the PISM Professional Development Center transfer their knowledge based on years of professional experience. In 2008, the course was enhanced to a specialized degree program on BSBA Major in Supply Management, which prepares students to take on jobs for entry level positions in supply chain management at the end of two years. On the other hand, graduates of the four-year course can be placed in excellent career track jobs. Every year, Supply Chain Asia hopes to provide delegates an enriching networking and learning experience through the Supply Chain Asia Forum. This year, it aimed to engage a wider audience in the community by extending a special platform for students and young professionals to compete in the first ever Asia Pacific Supply Chain Management Competition. The challenge is open to all students aged 18-25 years old who will compete by providing the best innovative solutions to real case studies of their selected companies. The top teams from countries within the region came together on the second day of the forum for the final showdown. Other countries that competed in the challenge were Malaysia, Taiwan, and Thailand.
