GARDEN TALK with DOUG - Ornamental Grasses Provide Seasonal Changes August is the month to appreciate all ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus, Pennisetum, and Pampas grass with all their beautiful plumes that provide motion and contrast. Because there are so many varieties of ornamental grasses to choose with different growing characteristics, ornamental grasses can be used as specimens, border plants, background, ground cover, or as a container plant. The stately Pampas grass is a true favorite of gardeners with its height and large, white plumes. I especially like the Hamlin and Little Bunny fountain grasses. Other favorites of mine are the Japanese Blood grass, Zebra grass, Muhly grass, and Black Mondo grass. I am not a geranium or marigold type of gardener. I prefer plants that stage seasonal interest and are low maintenance. The only maintenance that I give to my ornamental grasses is in early March when I cut them to the ground to get ready for the upcoming growing season. In addition to being low maintenance, all ornamental grasses are drought tolerant and deer resistant, which are two more bonuses for many gardeners. Few plants can match ornamental grasses for their easy care, low maintenance, and four season beauty. If you want to have interest in the garden throughout the year, ornamental grasses are the answer.
