GENESEE COUNTY/LeRoy The nose knows K9 Destro shows his skills at the Oatka Festival Deputy Chris Erion and K9 Destro have only been paired for nine months. During there short time together, Destro and Deputy Erion have learned to become a team. Deputy Erion says Destro has been used a lot of times in his nine months of service. They have been involved in narcotic searches and have located evidence at crime scenes that would not otherwise have been found. Erion and Destro put on a demonstration at the Oatka Festival yesterday afternoon. The demonstration highlighted an evidence and narcotics search, and chasing down a bad guy. Erion says it is important to educate the public on what the dog is capable of and what he can do. Having a K9 unit at the Genesee County Sheriffs Department is very beneficial for local law enforcement agencies in Genesee County. The dog is really the communities dog, Erion says. He is owned by the county and the K9 program is supported by donations from people in the community, so its good to show them what their money is going to. Destro is a 2 1/2 year old German Shepard imported from Canada. He has two brothers also working in law enforcement. One in Buffalo and the other in Canada. Destro lives with Erion, his wife and four children on a farm with lots of farm animals. Erion says he is very well mannered but is not really a lap dog or a good pet. They always want to go go go, they never want to just lay on the couch, according to Erion. He trains and works each day at home when he is not working. If anyone would like to see a demonstration in person, Deputy Erion and K9 Destro will be at Lei -Ti Campground on Francis road next Saturday July 26th at 2:00 p.m. during their Christmas in July event.
