GENTLEMEN, BE SEATED! (1963) by Jerome Moross and Edward Eager THIS ISNT A GENTLEMANS WAR The curtain is down on the Lyric Stage production of THE GOLDEN APPLE. Following rave reviews and audience acclaim, lets hope this revival leads to more revivals and a renewed popularity of Morosss body of work. We are continuing with the series of excerpts from another Jerome Moross musical, GENTLEMEN, BE SEATED! Todays abridged track is THIS ISNT A GENTLEMANS WAR What is a Gentleman’s War? No one today would consider warfare a civilized pastime. A “gentleman’s war” referred to an 18th and 19th Century convention where soldiers of opposing sides would line up on a field of battle and take turns firing at each until one side lost so many soldiers that the officers would declare a retreat. The foot soldiers were essentially cannon fodder. But, there were rules: Return prisoners; care for the enemy’s wounded; don’t kill the officers (the gentlemen class.) Jerome Moross and Edward Eager, in their musical history of the Civil War, parody the concept of the Gentleman’s War and tell how the Civil War changed the rules of engagement forever.
