GEORGE TOWN: Two ex cops were sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and fined RM10,000 each, by the Sessions court here today for two bribery charges. Sgt Yang Ghazali Abu Hanifah, 58, and L/Corporal M. Vathumalai, 52, who were formerly attached with the Northeast district police patrol branch were found guilty of soliciting RM400 from Tan Seong Soon, 41. The duo had asked for the bribe as an inducement not to take action against two Chinese nationals, Fan Qiyan and Wei Youmei for allegedly working in the country without a permit. They committed the offence near Loo Yee Fish Spa & Restaurant at Lorong Madras here at 11.20 pm on May 13, 2011. Yang Ghazali and Vathumalai were also guilty of corruptly receiving RM400 from one Seong Soon on behalf of his cousin Tan Seong Hooi at 12.10 am on May 14, 2011, at the same place. Judge Khairul Anuar Abdul Halim in his ruling said the actions of the duo had eroded public confidence in the police and tarnished the image of the force. Meanwhile, the court granted counsel Rosli Ismails application for a stay of execution of the duos sentences pending an appeal, but ordered them to settle their respective fines today or face another six months jail. Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Ghazali Mohammad Nadzri prosecuted.
