GERIANS AND THE ISSUE OF INTERPRETATION There are news trending on social media and will make headlines today on national newspaper that President Goodluck Jonathan will not contest the 2015 Presidential Election. Yes, to some folks that is the message but to others, it is the reverse. I have observed that Nigerians have difficulties on interpretations especially on political statements. Let us all critique the two statements: 1. This is the last Democracy Day of this administration. Every discernable mind knows very well that May 2014 is the last for this present administration which began on May 29, 2011 and will end by May 29, 2015 completing the four year single tunure as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. So, what is the big deal about the statement? Is May 2014 not the last in the present administration? 2. That a new government will be in place by 2015. Again, Jonathan is right. A new government will be formed by 2015 and there was no clause that he will not be part of that government or that he will not contest the 2015 presidential poll. Jonathan is a political leader in Nigeria and political leaders are fun of political statements no matter where they find themselves. Be it in church, at the palace of traditional rulers or at ceremonies. The problem that is plaguing society is the interpretation of statements especially when coming from leaders. If they cough or sneeze, that alone will make headline that will sell the newspaper or magazine. Jonathans statement give different meaning to different people base on which college you graduated from. But to an average discernable politician, it is just a statement to calm some nerves and stir up nationwide debate. Though the media will give it a new intonation but the truth remains that Dr. Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan, GCFR, the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria will seek for a second term in office by flying the ticket of Peoples Democratic Party come 2015 till 2019. He must consolidated on his Transformation Agenda and the reform going on in all sectors of the economy. It is on this premise that I urge all his supporters home and in diaspora to continue to give Mr. President all reasonable doubt to deliver on his mandate. At the same time, I caution the detractors by whatever guises to allow for an enabling environment for development to thrive as no economy globally grows in a society characterized with violence. By 2019, a new Nigeria will be birthed and we will all rejoice.
