GERMANY - The investigation carried out at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, Germany (MPI) uncovered the brutal way in which monkeys’ lives were controlled and manipulated by researchers, causing severe suffering. Subjected to major brain surgery to implant devices in their skulls; deliberately deprived of water for days; controlled by a pole attached to a collar around their necks; held in a restraint device (called a primate ‘chair’) with their heads immobilised by a post implanted in their skulls, the monkeys were imprisoned inside dark, silent chambers and forced to carry out mundane tasks over and over for hours at a time, day after day, month after month. It is a living nightmare for the animals and death is their only escape. The research industry would have you believe that the monkeys’ activity is voluntary. They use innocuous words such as training and sitting in a “chair”. The reality is, however, that these wild animals were forced to do these things by depriving them of water for days and physically restraining them in highly abnormal and uncomfortable positions for many hours at a time. The use of restraint chairs, head posts and neck clamps is extremely harsh and causes immense suffering.
