GET READY FOR APRIL 2015! just been planning how to get around the whole island in 6 month (will explain why 6 months later) my goodness its a lot of beaches if we are only going 2 events a month so there is going to be the biggest EVER clean up on the back of the wight on Saturday, April the 5th starting at 9:00am. in one day we will aim to clear around 7 miles of coast line, using 5 access points and 10 teams between Hanover point to shepherds chine. we will need at least 10 people per team so we will need over 100+ volunteers! (island population is around 160,000 so I dont think its much to ask) I know this can be done as early this year Hannah Davies arranged a big clean up from Hannover point, I would say that there was between 100-150 people, 5 tonnes of rubbish was brought back to Hanover point car park alone and a possible other 3 to 4 tonnes taken to the car park at brook bay. So around 9 tonnes was removed over a 2 mile section So we could be looking at a possible 30 tonnes of litter in 1 day!!!! This will be HUGE and I need every ones help to make this happen including finding 10 group leaders, (who I hope will have walky talkies to communicate with the other groups) we need quad bikes with trailers, possibly boats, marker flags to be made, maps to be printed and LOADS OF PUBLICITY! may look at meeting up somewhere for a coffee to talk about the plans, the island beaches are bigger than me, this needs to be a ISLAND effort! :) Day 2 of the big weekend event Sunday 6th of April will be a little easier focusing on 3 teams at Totland, Colwell and Fort vic, these will be less intense and more child friendly but I still expect to get 1 to 2 tonnes to add to our total. By doing this annually we can start collecting data that over the coming years will determine if litter is on the up of going down, we can look at weather conditions ( mainly winter wind directions) and later try to predict the of amount of debris we can expect and key spots where litter accumulates so we can better target our efforts. This could be the biggest single uk beach cleaning event ever! I hope people across the u.k will see our mammoth efforts and look to help keeping the rest of the u.k beaches clean too, and maybe when they visit next year they will think twice about leaving litter on our beaches. I will post the dates of the events for the next 6 months shortly. PLEASE ENCORAUGE OTHERS TO GET INVOLVED BY TALKING TO THEM ABOUT US AND BY SHARING OUR PAGE, AT THE MOMENT 380 OF OF 160,000 JUST IS NOT ENOUGH :(
