GETTING TO THE TOP OF YOUR GAME This story in John 2 vs 1-11 is one that has inspired me a lot. Related to our days, the drama would probably play out like this: Bridegroom: “hey guys, my wedding is on Saturday in Cana, you must be there oh” (vs 2 Jesus and his disciples had been invited to the wedding) Jesus and his disciples: Sure thing now, hope there’ll be plenty chops and wine oh” (Remember Jesus said “my time has not yet come” (vs 4), so he was still like any other young man in the community) Now Jesus was at the party gisting with his disciples and enjoying the party, no complications, he was just Jesus- not the messiah, no wonder working, demon driving, dead raising, son of God, he was just the son of the carpenter enjoying the party with his “friends” Mary, like every typical woman, is up and down the whole place, making sure there’s food and drinks for everybody. We all know how mummies could be at a party now! Then… Servants: mummy, the drinks are out oh, all the wine’s finished. Mary: Are u serious, u mean all that wine’s gone, Eh, my God what kind of wahala is this? Where do we want to start getting drinks from at this time? She walks to the bar and realizes it’s true all the wine was gone. “ha, this party must not flop oh, you know what, am coming” Then she goes to her son, putting up all her feminine charm and using her “motherly manipulating” voice- u know that voice mumsies use when they want you to do something for them knowing well you might not want to do the thing? “Oko mi, hope u enjoying the party, hum, imagine all the wine is finished” She knew very well that all she has to do was just let him know there was a need. Jesus fully understanding his mum “ooh, mummy, what is all this now, which one concern me concern wine don finish, you know my time hasn’t come” Mary: “Oko mi ma binu” Quickly, she leaves him, you know the way you sow a seed in someone’s heart and leave. She had fully achieved her aim, and then she calls all the servants: “you know what, just hang around him, he’ll call you soon and whatever he tells you, just do it.” If there was anybody that knew Jesus well at that time, it would have been Mary. She knew he was a special child straight from God. Only she was 100% convinced of that. Evidently, Jesus would have been showing himself in the house. She would have seen him do stuffs, fix things, maybe there had been days when food wasn’t enough and she had seen him fix that. It probably wasn’t her first time of telling Jesus there was a need so she knew her “savior” Jesus probably at that moment contacted heaven for permission and God had said “do it that those who follow you may put their trust in you (vs 11)” So he called the servants “you guys fill these pots with water” I’m almost too sure the servants would have said amongst themselves “Which one is this one, we said there is no wine; you said we should fill six large pots with water, how now, is it ceremonial washing time? Anyway, wetin be our own now, Na anything they tell us make we do na in we go do now” Next he says “Draw a glass for the master of the ceremony” “Ok now guys, this is the height, how can we draw water from the pots to give the master of ceremony to drink” I mean the master of the banquet would be like the most important personality at the wedding. He obviously was a big man and knew where the good things lie. But like typical servants- a Yoruba adage says, it’s the person that sends someone that is feared not the person you’re been sent to- they obeyed. The chairman was greatly impressed. He goes like: “Now this is what I call good wine, e yi wa leni ko si n ko” (this is there and you say there’s nothing)” “Oko Iyawo, why did u keep this kind of good wine away till now, don’t you know you give people the best at the beginning, then when they are so drunk you give them the cheap ones, then, there are too drunk to know what’s good or bad. The truth is the bride groom probably knew that rule and had done just that with his wine. Many of us have given our very best to a situation, we know the rules and have followed it to the letter but the moment Jesus steps in, our best is rubbished and people begin to wonder “so you had this in you and you were behaving like that” The bride groom’s best wasn’t good enough to have gotten the people filled. If it was, there won’t have been the urgency to get more wine. Your best might not have been good enough to fill a need you’re trying so hard to fill, people might have started wagging tongues but the moment Jesus steps in, the moment He decides to manifest himself in your situation, the very best of people, kings and princes, experts in the field would seek you and want to know your secret. Let Jesus in today. Interestingly, he might ask you to do something so simple it sounds crazy, Just do it. Obey without questioning. Just do it. Imagine the servants; see how foolish they might have though the idea was: take water to the chairman of the occasion-that was no child’s play. It took a lot of guts. Many of us have given our very best to our relationships and many things around us and it was not good enough. The people we striving to please still demanded more of us, don’t be stressed, let Jesus in. He says we should cast all our cares on him for he cares for us (1 peter 5 vs 7). Frustrated at work- no matter how hard you work, it’s never enough. Take it Jesus in faith. Do what he tells you no matter how silly it might sound to you. The bible says the foolishness of God is much greater than the best of the wisdom of man (1 Cor 1 vs 25) just do it and your superiors, colleagues and experts at work will ask you- “Where has this you been all the while” it’ll be a sweat less transition victory (Isa 28 vs 23-29) Let’s examine some attributes that set Mary, the servants and the bridegroom apart; The bridegroom: he had Jesus on board. That saved his party and reputation. Imagine if Jesus wasn’t at that party. It would have been a major flop. Mary: she knew Jesus and had faith in him. She was too sure all she had to do was cast all her cares upon him and he’ll take it from there. She didn’t go pestering him, she just casted her cares and acted fully in faith. The servant: they obeyed fully. No questions, even though it probably didn’t make sense to them. They acted on it and did as they were told (child like faith). You have to be able to obey God without thinking things through. So putting all these important attributes together, the summary of the whole story would read: 1. Have Jesus in your life 2. Take your cares and burdens to him 3. Obey him instructions fully 4. You on top of the world.
