#GIOTTODUMPISTE #DANDORADUMPSITE BAN PLASTICS 30 MICRONS AND BELOW By James Wakibia They say cleanliness is next to godliness, I don’t know how true that is but I am tempted to believe that indeed God hates the unclean whether spiritually or physically and He wouldn’t like stench emanating from the earth reaching the high heavens as He enjoys some cool breeze. My beef today is not with the spirit for I do not live in the spirit world but the physical filth. I am concerned with the culture of impunity and ‘a don’t care’ attitude most Kenyans have developed in littering the only environment that God gave us. Government Efforts to ban plastics have never seen the light of the day-you can guess why- good proposals have been drafted to eliminate plastic 30 microns and below but something somehow comes in the implementation. A case in point is the 2007 proposed banning of plastic 30 microns and below by the government, it failed terribly and all went quiet. The proposals were by all standards for the best interest of the public who suffer greatly from pollution and clogged drainage but the question is why the proposals always failed. It seems some manufactures and businessmen who directly or indirectly are involved with the production and sale of plastics somehow cripple such initiatives for their own greed, the worst example of capitalism; make as much profit as you can at the expense of the others. They are in cohort with government officials to ensure that such laws never go through .We must address the issue of plastic production and disposal now or continue suffering from the obvious effects of the same. Of course plastics cannot be fully banned;that’s why we need a certain thickness of paper plastic to be done with, papers have been written by many environmental specialists that we must control the production and disposal of such products. The benefits are many but we end up merely talking and writing papers then do nothing. We must speak out against environmental misdemeanors with all terms possible. We must only use what we can recycle and reuse the rest must be banned. Our dumpsites are a national shame, they were wrongly designed, and there is no single law that is followed when it comes to dumping. Waste of all nature is concocted together like githeri then collected, heaped together and dumped in one location. I suggest sorting of waste to avoid this mixing up; plastic should be collected by specific entities and dumped in a plastic dumpsite where a recycling plant can be put up, metals and electronic waste should have their own dumping ground and the biodegradable waste should too be allocated a specific place for dumping, that way it would be easy to manage all kinds of waste been produced. Possibly the best thing to do is to establish a Plastic Recycling and Managing Authority to only deal with the issue of plastic .This is because plastic is the biggest problem with have so far when it comes to the issue of waste. Dumpsites like Giotto in Nakuru and Dandora in Nairobi are as a result of poor and uncontrolled waste management and constant court battles that take eternity to conclude. NEMA should act decisively to ensure that all Kenyans live in habitable and clean environment. The institution which lacks teeth should work for the benefit of the people of Kenya. Clean environment is the responsibility of every one of us. We must not talk about how clean Rwanda is while we abuse our own environment. Green is clean lightwords(c)2013jameswakibia
