GIROLAMO SAVONARALO (1452--1498) A dominican friar and fiery preacher who tried to introduce reforms in the Western church shortly before the Protestant Reformation. He was a contemporary of Leonardo Da Vinci. He was a popular figure in Florence, Italy as he railed against the immorality of Pope Alexander VI and the corruption of the Medici rulers of Florence. He claimed to have special revelation from God, and he was excommunicated when he disregarded the Popes order that he stop preaching. Shortly thereafter he was hanged and burned as a heretic.
