GLORYBOUND Uncle Frank was always a confrontational character. - TopicsExpress

GLORYBOUND Uncle Frank was always a confrontational character. When he raised above his bullet eye a question mark brow it was the Hambidge in him that with the nose unbroken continues to raise questions today. Yes I am a Hambidge no doubt, a good quarter, and Bond and Barnard and Burger. And it is good stuff I think, and I am proud of it. And I am proud today to be with the last one remaining, a Barnard nee Hambidge, with the same nose and eyebrow. Who tells me a thing or two still about that mischievous brother of hers that I think nobody else knows, and nobody else will know, because they don’t spend time with her the way I do. And if we talk of eyebrows I think of us who have them too, who have the nose on top of it, so much like a Hebrew I would have said, if Hitler had got hold of us it would have been tickets. And there I see Uncle Frank in the plane, bombing him regardless. Yes, Mom was telling me it was him, the navigator, that steered the crew safely back from the brink every time. And his quiet voice, and his calm spirit, and his steady heart. And I can imagine myself a pilot on that plane, or a gunner, with the flak flying around, and the shrapnel. The cool and calm and steady voice of the navigator easing my fears and guiding me home. Ah my uncle I think of you on this last flight we must take, and I think of the end of the road. But it is not a road at all, but a runway, and a runway yes, heading home.
