GM TO RETIRE AFTER 35TH KCB GURU NANAK >>THE 2014 KCB KIAMBU RALLY CLERK OF THE COURSE HAS ELABORATE PLANS TO INTRODUCE MOTORSPORT IN HIS MURANGA HOMETOWN George Mwangi, the only black indigenous African navigator to win the prestigious Safari Rally in 2006 with the legendary Azar Anwar, has said he will retire from the sport after the 35th KCB Guru Nanak Rally slated for Naivasha on Sunday November 23. Mwangi, a former Formula Two navigators champion with the late Gregory Kibiti, will be navigating Hussein Malik in a National Oil sponsored Mitsubishi EVO6. I realize people in Nairobi dont know much about Muranga County. When we talked Kiambu earlier in the year, nobody ever thought there would be a good rally there, they always said the area is densely populated. You can imagine that there are people in Nairobi who have never been to Muranga and likewise, folks in Muranga who have never seen rally cars. And again you never know, another GM could emerge from the same Muranga village. But this may not come to fruition due to lack of exposure. Exposure generates interest, said Mwangi. Mwangi is the son of the fallen Safari Rally veteran Wairegi. He started his racing career in 1992 navigating George Muhindi. My first ever KNRC was the 1992 edition of Guru Nanak when I called pace notes for my namesake George Muhindi in a Colt Lancer. We came 12th overall. Thats why I have decided that I am going to wrap up my racing career with yet another Guru Nanak. Before my first Kenya National, we had done so many training rallies with Muhindi in a Surb 99 and Colt Lancer. My debut rally was the 1999 KMSC Clubman Rally. I want my people back home to benefit from sports tourism and at the same time I will also be farming there.
