GMHC Announces New Leadership Team Roberta Kaplan and Michael Harwood Will Co-Chair GMHC Board New Senior Staff Members Join CEO Kelsey Louie, Who Begins Today GMHC announced today the election of Roberta Kaplan and Michael Harwood as Co-Chairs of the Board of Directors, and two new senior staff members: Anthony Hayes, who will serve as the Managing Director of Public Affairs and Policy, and Bruce Anderson, who will serve as Managing Director of Development. These announcements come on the first day on the job for new CEO Kelsey Louie, who actively recruited the new senior management team. For nearly a decade, Anthony Hayes has served as a strategic advisor in non-profit, for-profit and government agencies including New Yorkers United for Marriage Equality, Human Rights Campaign, Deutsche Bank, the Avon Foundation and Prudential Douglas Elliman. Most recently, as a senior staff member of the Port Authority of NY & NJ, he managed media and communications focusing on highly sensitive issues at the bi- state agency that oversees five airports, six bi-state crossings, the PATH commuter rail system, the nations busiest bus terminal and largest seaport operation on the East Coast, the 16-acre World Trade Center site and a 1,600 member police force. Bruce Anderson began his work in HIV/AIDS in 1986 when he became the first Deputy Executive Director for Program Operations at GMHC. From there, he took positions at AmFAR and The Actors Fund. From 2000 until 2010, Bruce served on the board of the LGBT Center, the last five as its President. He has held two Interim Executive Director positions, first at the LGBT Center and then at Congregation Beit Simchat Torah (CBST), the worlds largest LGBT Synagogue, and was the interim Development Director of the Center for one year. To return to GMHC, he departs the position of Development Director at CBST. We are so excited about the new senior management team at GMHC, including new CEO Kelsey Louie as well as new Director of Public Affairs and Policy Anthony Hayes and new Director of Development Bruce Anderson, who will help to lead GMHCs important work in the years ahead. This includes intensifying GMHCs focus on meeting the changing needs of our clients, curbing new infections among vulnerable populations, and eradicating the AIDS epidemic once and for all, Kaplan said. Its now time for our new team to roll up their sleeves and get to work. But at the same time, we all need to acknowledge that none of this would have been possible without the tireless efforts of our prior Board Chair, Mickey Rolfe, who worked so hard to lay the groundwork for the challenges and opportunities ahead. Im delighted to have this immensely capable new team behind me as I begin my work here at GMHC, said incoming CEO Kelsey Louie. Their support and deep experience in the community will be invaluable as I work with clients, staff, board members, volunteers and supporters to develop a comprehensive assessment of GMHCs operations and programs over the next several months. The Board of Directors elected Attorneys Roberta Kaplan and Michael Harwood to succeed Myron Sulzberger (Mickey) Rolfe, as the new Co-Chairs of the GMHC Board. Rolfe is credited by Board members with overseeing the expansion and professionalization of the Board and its committees and deepening their role in the organization. Rolfe also guided the organization through a year of administration transition, culminating in the recent appointment of Kelsey Louie as new CEO. Robbie and I cannot thank Mickey enough for his phenomenal leadership and unending dedication to GMHC over the past several years, Harwood said. We have both learned so much from him and from his willingness to give and to keep the organization on strong footing. In addition to Kaplan and Harwood, several current board members will take on new leadership roles, including noted HIV doctor Frank Spinelli as Vice-Chair and Osvaldo Perdomo as the new Secretary. Warren Bimblick will continue in his role as Treasurer. Board Bios: Roberta (Robbie) Kaplan joined the GMHC Board in October 2012, most recently serving as Board Secretary. Kaplan, a partner in the Litigation Department of Paul, Weiss LLP, represented Edie Windsor in her case before the United States Supreme Court. In its landmark decision in Windsor last June, the Supreme Court ruled that a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) violated equal protection principles of the United States Constitution. Since the Windsor decision, more than two dozen courts throughout the United States have held, relying on Windsor, that gay couples should be accorded equal rights under the law. Among other honors, Kaplan has been named one of the 100 Most Influential Lawyers in the United States. Michael C. Harwood joined the Board in June 2011 and served for the past year as Vice Chair. Harwood is a Partner at Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP, where his practice focuses on large commercial litigation matters, frequently in connection with some of the largest commercial bankruptcies in the country, including Enron, Adelphia, and MF Global. Michael has represented large investment companies and bankruptcy trustees in claims for management, attorney, and accounting malpractice, fraud, and breach of contract. At GMHC, he has helped focus attention on prevention issues and, in particular, the effort to broaden the knowledge and use of PrEP as a major tool in the effort to end the AIDS epidemic. Frank Spinelli, MD, FACP is a licensed and board certified internist working at Chelsea Village Medical in Manhattan. He is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is the author of the Advocate Guide to Gay Mens Health and Wellness (2008) and his memoir, PEE SHY (2014). He is also a regular contributor to The Huffington Post and The Advocate on HIV/AIDS and other health concerns affecting the LGBT community. Osvaldo Perdomo is an accomplished fashion industry professional and award-winning artist & photographer. A GMHC client since 2005, Perdomo has co-curated Art & AIDS group exhibitions for Gay Mens Health Crisis (GMHC) as of 2009 in an effort to minimize AIDS stigma, raise awareness and enhance the spirit and promote the art work of emerging and established artists who are living with HIV/AIDS. He was also the organizer of the recent Light Up New York initiative, which lit 10 iconic New York skyscrapers red in the lead-up to AIDS Walk New York. Osvaldo joined GMHCs board and its Development Committee in June 2012. Warren Bimblick is senior vice president, strategy and business development at Penton, and a member of the Penton Executive Committee. He was vice president, investor relations for Primedia Inc. from 1997 to 2001. He is the former treasurer of the board of the American Red Cross in Greater New York and chaired the board of Davids House, an AIDS/HIV service organization in Greater Toledo. New CEO Kelsey Louie is a dedicated manager with deep expertise in administering programs that serve people with HIV/AIDS, and a track record of strengthening client health outcomes. A native New Yorker who holds an MSW from New York University and an MBA from Columbia University, Louie joins GMHC after years of work in community-based HIV/AIDS prevention and care. Most recently, he served as Chief Operating Officer at the Harlem United Community AIDS Center, where he has worked since 2007, managing a staff of 350, overseeing the agencys $42 million budget and operations, and working to expand and strengthen the agencys services for its thousands of clients. Louie is also no stranger to GMHC, having previously served as Coordinator of Counseling & Education in 2006.
