GMO giant aiming for unhealthy monopoly - Columnists | IOL Business | IOL.co.za --- On Saturday the streets of Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and 433 other cities worldwide flooded with people in protest against US-based firm Monsanto and the use of GMOs. More than 90 percent of US maize, soya bean, cotton and canola is genetically modified. A pioneer of GMOs, Monsanto is the largest supplier of seed by value and holds an infamous track record of lawsuits, environmental destruction and manipulation of government officials in the US and elsewhere. Yet beyond the science the real controversy lies in how Monsanto protects what it claims belongs to it....
