GODS LOVE IS NOT FICKLE By Lakan Mariano Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet My unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor My covenant of peace be removed, says the LORD, who has compassion on you. Isaiah 54:10 I knew they were not listening. Some young couples who come in for premarital counseling probably only came in because we require it if any of us at College Hills will have any part in their wedding or if they are going to use our facilities. They sat in my office starry eyed and I often wondered if they were hearing me in the same way Charlie Brown and his friends hear their teacher. Wowum, wowum, wowum... They sat there holding hands, casting furtive glances oozing with love, oblivious to most of what I was saying. Many marriages survive and flourish even in difficult circumstances. There are far too many though that are wrecked not by infidelity nor abuse but simply falling out of love. Sociologist Alvin Toffler wrote in 1970 in his book Future Shock that relationships might be a natural casualty of our throw-away society, the widespread use of disposable items. Whether Toffler is right or not far too many relationships, including marriages, become disposable because of emotions. The problem with emotion is that it is fickle. You fall in love with a girl because she is charming and beautiful. The Bible says, Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting (Proverbs 31:30). If you can fall in love, you can also fall out of love. The Lord Jesus did not fall in love with you. The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness (Jeremiah 31:3). The love of the Lord for His children did not start when you started paying attention to Him, following Him. It started way before you were even born. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves (Ephesians 1:4-6). The world around us maybe falling apart. But Gods love stands. The worldly fortifications you have set up around you--your career, your savings, a sense of approval from some people, your health, your kids--maybe crumbling, but Gods love endures. Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet My unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor My covenant of peace be removed, says the LORD, who has compassion on you. Gods love is not fickle. It is not based on how you are. It is based on who He is. So stop trusting your emotions. Quit focusing on your circumstances. Look to God and find peace and safety in His love. And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God! (Ephesians 3:17-19, MSG).
