GOLD The precious metal that has built and destroyed kingdoms. It is traded, cherished, demanded, worshiped, horded and transforms what it adorns. Gold is dense, soft and malleable. It is a ductile metal with a vibrant, bright yellow color and luster that is, and always will be, wanted. Gold is the only metal that is yellow or “golden”. Nearly all of the gold on Earth came from meteorites that bombarded the planet over 200 million years after it formed. The element symbol for gold is Au. The symbol comes from the old Latin name for gold, aurum, which means “shining dawn” or “glow of sunrise”.
