GOOD IDEAS in ART EDUCATION - something we can get excited about! Greetings, Good ideas in arts education come in all sizes. Here are three innovative projects in arts education in Portland that the whole state deserves to know about. Maine Inside Out is a Portland-based program that facilitates the group creation and performance of original theater by incarcerated and formerly incarcerated youth and uses those performances to engage the community in dialogue about issues related to incarceration. The work of Maine Inside Out is inspired and its impact is undeniable. The public is invited to “Coming Home After Lock-up: Days of Change,” an original performance and community dialogue on November 17th at One Longfellow Square. A small gem of a project is at Portlands Waynfleet School. High School art teacher Judy Novey uses an in-school gallery to showcase the work of the schools art students the way other schools use their hallway walls. This fall, before her students have finished works to showcase, she has been using the space for DIY interactive group art that encourages all the students in the school to participate. She has also gotten the project listed in Portlands FirstFriday Art Walk on November 7,th when all who visit the gallery can contribute as well. The details about the specific art activities involved as well as photos will be up very soon on our MAAE website, MailScanner has detected a possible fraud attempt from maineartsed.us5.list-manage1 claiming to be maineartsed.org. The mega project in this group, a partnership between SideXSide - a Portland-based community arts organization - and the University of Southern Maine Art Department, is “Project Imagine,” for which the partners have just received a $1.9 million four-year federal grant. Project Imagine will develop comprehensive k-5 programs integrating standards-based arts education into the core elementary and middle school curricula in four Portland elementary schools, as well as a professional development institute for teachers, teaching artists, and student interns. It will not only meld the expertise of classroom teachers, artists and professional content experts in extensive program development, but expand the teaching team itself to include all three. For all of us in Maine it will be exciting to observe the projects progress and learn from it. For more information visit sidexsideme. Each of these projects expands the reach of creative art-making.
