GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS FOR THE WINTER WEATHER FANS TURNING SHARPLY - TopicsExpress

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS FOR THE WINTER WEATHER FANS TURNING SHARPLY COLDER THIS WEEK! The good news is that the next five or six days will feel like December out there, especially tomorrow and Wednesday. High temperatures, more than 20 degrees below normal in some cases, along with icy cold wind chills will certainly put you in the holiday spirit. OLD MAN WINTER OFF TO A FAST START! Take a look at the first two images below. The first image is a look at the current snow cover across the United States as of today (November 17th). The second image shows the amount of snow that was on the ground this same time last year. You can clearly see the difference. This has been an incredible arctic outbreak! One for the record books for a large portion of the country! Temperatures as cold as -27 degrees in Casper, Wyoming , 7 consecutive days of sub freezing temperatures in Minneapolis, 50 inches of snow has fallen since last week in Gile, Wisconsin (image #3), ice is already being reported on parts of Lake Superior and the list goes on and on. BUT IT WILL TURN MILDER AGAIN NEXT WEEK! Looking at the oscillation indexes (image #4), the long range would indicate that winter is going to retreat back up in to Canada for a while. Just in case your wondering about accuracy, theyve actually been pretty good so far this fall season (in two week increments). They predicted a very mild October and in fact it was a blow torch month with temperatures finishing 3-4 degrees above average. They also predicted a milder than average start to November and up until the 12th our temperatures were a degree above normal with three days in the 70s and another day near 70 (69). So October was mild as predicted, the first two weeks of November were mild as predicted and now the pattern looks like it wants to revert back to mild again for Thanksgiving. LOOKING IN TO DECEMBER Once this cold pattern breaks (either Sunday [11/23] or Monday [11/24] of next week), its difficult to say how long the mild weather will stick around again. I honestly wouldnt trust the indexes any further out then two weeks. So that would take us in to the first few days of December. Then well have to wait and see if the arctic cold wants to reload. One things for certain though, I think its crystal clear that Old Man Winter isnt messing around this year. You can see how nasty cold it could end up getting at times this winter. This is all thanks to the incredible amount of snow cover and cold that continues to build across the Northern Hemisphere (image #5).
