GOOD WEEKEND. This past weekend was a good one for me. I helped man the booth for Sacred Friend’s Wildlife Rehabilitation at the Nansemond Pow Wow. There were some light showers on Sat. where we were but heavy rain elsewhere that kept the crowd small. On Sun. there was a light drizzle until 9:30. It stayed cloudy until about 1pm. As the singers were offering up songs prior to the Grand Entrance the clouds parted over the circle and I spotted an Eagle soaring high in the sky. I’m not kidding it really did happen. The rest of the day the sun and clouds took turns and the rain stayed away. I met a little girl on Sat. She is the daughter of one of the regular venders. She was showing everyone the two snails she picked from the reeds nearby. She asked me if I wanted to see the crabs see discovered. Well the booth was mostly set up so I grabbed my camera and off we went on a little nature walk. She is friends with all the venders and everyone looks out for her. I see in her all the traits that will make her a beautiful woman. She is smart and outgoing and polite, full of energy and wants to help, loves animals, curious about everything even bugs. I was assured she also has a sense of who is a good person and who is not. She still can be a pest at times but after all she is just a little girl. On Sun. before the gates opened an Indian friend of Jimmy and Pearl came by to show them some of his prized and sacred possessions. I felt privileged to be among those invited to share his presentation. First he laid out 4 tail feathers from a Golden Eagle. They were from the eagle gifted to his grandfather when he was born. They were passed down to his son and now to his grandson. They are 125 years old and in pristine condition. A testament to the skill and dedication of those entrusted with their care. Next he laid out a complete set of tail feathers from an eagle. Eagle’s feathers have the same pattern on both sides. These did not. No one feather had the same pattern. The other unique feature is there appear to be ghostly images on some of the feathers. I did not see them but others did. They were indeed beautiful. Along with the 2 Red Tail Hawks that make regular appearances as educational birds we had a Coopers Hawk making his first public appearance. Coopers Hawks are known to be high strung so it amazed all that he was so calm. At times all three birds had the urge to leave their perches (they were tethered). The highlight of my weekend was when I retrieved the Coopers Hawk on one such occasion. Instead of hopping back on the perch he hopped on my forearm. He kept inching his way up to my bicep before finally getting on the perch. The amazing thing is I didn’t have a glove on and he didn’t cinch down with his talons. A hawk has tremendous power in those talons so he must have trusted me. This was the first time I had a hawk on my arm. It was a thrill I will remember a long time.
