GOVERNMENT UNLEASHES A SCRAMBLE TO THE BOTTOM IN THE JOBS MARKET The Con Dem government claims to have created jobs in the private sector to compensate for the cuts it is making in the public sector, but the overwhelming majority of these new jobs are low paid. Of the 587,000 net rise in employee numbers since 2010, 79% are in low-paid industries such as retail, hospitality and residential care. The new figures, published by the TUC, demonstrate that the government is deliberately turning Britain into a low pay economy characterised buy casual labour and insecurity as reliable public sector jobs are turned in to low paid insecure jobs. As TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady has said: "The government frequently boasts about record levels of employment, even though people’s job chances have fallen in recent months. But what’s more concerning is that four in five new jobs are in industries where the average wage is less than £8 an hour. One of the unreported struggles of recent years has been people being made redundant from middle-income jobs and having to take low-paid, low-skill jobs as it’s the only work available."
