GOVERNOR URGES RESIDENTS TO BE AWARE OF WEATHER CONDITIONS The governor is urging all residents to heed warnings sent out by the National Weather Service. There are strong wind, a small craft, and high surf advisories. “I’m asking everyone to be aware of the road and ocean conditions that this weather system is bringing over us,” the governor stated. “Be extra careful on the roads this week, and stay out of the waters.” Small Craft The National Weather Service issued a small craft advisory that will remain in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday. Northeast winds at about 29 mph to 35 mph and combined seas of 10 to 12 feet will produce hazardous conditions for operators of small crafts through Wednesday. Though meteorologists expect conditions to improve slightly by Thursday, they also warn that wind and sea conditions will still be hazardous. As a precaution, inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vehicles should avoid boating. If travel by boat is necessary, mariners should exercise extreme caution particularly near reef lines and when entering or leaving harbors and inlets. Strong Wind A strong wind advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday. Northeast winds are expected to increase overnight and reach 25 mph to 35 mph by early Tuesday morning. The winds should decrease to 20 mph to 30 mph Tuesday night and Wednesday. Gusts may reach 40 mph in rain showers. As a precaution, drivers, especially for high profile vehicles, are asked to use extra caution as winds this strong can make driving difficult. Homeowners are asked to secure small loose items and take down canopies and awnings that may become a safety hazard. High Surf A high surf advisory will remain in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday, along north facing reefs. Surf conditions will be dangerous at 8 feet to 10 feet along north facing reefs tonight through Tuesday night and 7 to 9 feet on Wednesday. As a precaution, avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches, especially north facing reefs, as rip currents will be life threatening.
