GRAPHIC POST!! GRAPHIC POST!!!!!!!!!!! SENSITIVE READERS, DO NOT VIEW PICTURES OR READ THIS POST!! The ninnyhammer scream. I was doing chores yesterday when I spotted something walking around amongst the chickens I’d let out an hour before. The pointed nose was unmistakable – it was an armadillo! Mr. Farmer was working on some machinery not far away. I had never seen an armadillo before (COOL!) and I wanted him to see it before it ran away, so I yelled the urgent song of a demented ninnyhammer: “HONEY! HONEY! HONEY! ARMADILLO! ARMADILLO!” Mr. Farmer said he’d never seen an armadillo on our farm in all of his years here on this farm. He came over, and as we got closer, we saw that the animal was badly injured, perhaps hit by a car. It looked miserable and moved slowly. We were easily able to get it into a pet carrier. It huddled in a corner, not acting afraid, just looking as if it did not want to continue with life as it was at the moment. I had read that armadillos carry leprosy, so I didn’t want such an animal running around the place where we live. We decided to euthanize it as humanely as we knew how, by gunshot. This is kind of a sad story, I know, but things like this happen on a farm. Dealing with life and death on a frequent basis is a necessity in managing both livestock and wildlife.
