GREENS NEWS FROM GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT, PATRICK DOLAN November brings cooler weather and frosts that have begun to slow things down on the golf course. With minimal turf growth at this time of the year, our focus begins to shift to our fall projects. Over the next month, clearing the golf course of the leaves and pine needles will take the majority of our time. At the end of October, we performed a sand injection (Dry Ject) procedure (picture) on greens #4, 11, and Putting Green. These are sand based greens that struggle to drain properly during frequent periods of rain or irrigation. When the sand profile becomes wet the turf will show signs of wet wilt and the surface becomes extremely soft. This can lead to a decline in playability and promote turf diseases, especially during high temperatures and humidity. To improve the soil profile we core aerate in the spring/fall, topdress with sand, solid or “vent” tine multiple times throughout the summer, and inject straight sand into the profile with the dry ject machine. Our first project will be to install drainage lines in areas that we had standing water, for example the bottom of #9 and #12 fairway. Surface inlets and pipes will be installed and connected to existing lines to eliminate the puddles, which will result in improved playability and turf that is healthier. As always, we will perform our seasonal tree maintenance of any overgrown or damaged trees that may pose safety concerns. Despite the cooler weather of the fall, our department always has plenty of work to accomplish to improve the course for the next season.
