GRENADA HEART FOUNDATION ASSIST PATIENT #300 ST.GEORGE’S, GRENADA, THURSDAY, AUGUST 29, 2013 – A fourteen year old Secondary school student is the 300th patient to receive open heart surgery under the Grenada Heart Foundation (GHF). Jaydee O’Farrel of Morne Fendue St. Patrick was born with a heart defect and received his first surgery as a baby in New Jersey. Now Thirteen years later he is about to receive his second surgery at the Richmond Hospital in Virginia, USA. O’Farrel together with his mother and the Coordinator of the (GHF) Ms. Jennifer Solomon, met with Health and Social Security Minister Dr. Clarice Modeste-Curween at her office earlier this week to discuss details of the travel, since the Ministry of Health provides support to the (GHF). Ms. Solomon indicated, that given the type of surgery O’Farrel is to undergo, it can cost between 50,000 - 70,000 USD, but because of the excellent relationship with the hospitals, cardiologist and surgeons, her organization can provide such service to Grenadians. Solomon said, O’Farrel leaves for the United States on September 8th, where he will spend at least a month. Upon meeting the Ofarrel’s and hearing the good news, Minister Modeste-Curwen said, it’s always a beautiful story when people in need of such care can get the care, attention and support they need. The Grenadian Health Minister encouraged the O’Farrel’s to trust in God and pray for God’s guidance throughout what she called a medical journey, adding that had it not been for such interventions he may not have been alive today. She also commended the (GHF) for their work and invaluable service to the people of Grenada, and called on corporate Grenada to keep supporting the (GHF) and similar organizations. Meanwhile, Jaydee’s mother was also high in praise for the support she received from the (GHF), the Ministry of Health, Dr. Beverley Nelson, CHORES, her family and friends, as well as the Principal, Staff and Students of the St. Marks Secondary School, where Jaydee is a form 3 student.
