GRIM FACE OF THE ECONOMY A 40-year old man from Daraga, Albay - TopicsExpress

GRIM FACE OF THE ECONOMY A 40-year old man from Daraga, Albay apologetically took his life yesterday, a local radio station has reported. Of all places, the incident took place in barangay Binitayan. The man sought understanding from his family, by writing his thoughts on a sheet of paper, before he hung himself from a rafter. The man regretted he could not earn enough for the financial needs of his family. Two institutions must take responsibility for this very unfortunate situation, because similar incidents happened before. The government and the dominant religious organizations must be responsible. The government does not create jobs. Instead, the government subsidizes poverty on selective basis. If government enumerators fail to take down your name, or if you happen to belong to another political persuasion, you will never benefit from the governments 4Ps. But why give away money selectively, when what the people want is for the jobless to land a job by choice, instead of receiving doleout? Just level out the playing field, and social dynamics will kick in, not what Dinky Soliman would like to portray herself forever -- the dispenser of cash and goods, as champion of the oppressed. The conditional cash transfer program is utter failure. Hundreds of billion pesos have been wasted without creating a single job. The dominant religious organization in the country is the Catholic Church. It caters to the urban poor, which is actually organized poverty because they elect president, vice-president etc. With such positions, these organizations have converted themselves into perpetual institutions, with no intention at all to eradicate poverty. Instead, they perpetuate poverty to maintain the officers in their respective positions. These positions are lucrative. Come election time, their leaders receive fund allocations from candidates who curry their favor. Just last night, at ANC TV channel, Fr. Anton Pascual informed Tina Monzon Plama that his group was fielding 300 members of the urban poor to form part of the crowd to grace the mass to be conducted by the Pontiff in Manila in January. Do the urban poor represent the poor in the Philippines? How about the folks in the hills who have nothing to eat, and who have not acquired the sophistication or savvy to organize themselves and be recognized by the Catholic Church? Both the government and the Church seem to fail to identify the problem. Which could be one reason the 40-year old man from Daraga chose to take his life, complete with an explanatory message for his Family. This is not the first time such unfortunate incident has taken place in this country. Let us call on our leaders, both in Government and in all religious organizations, to take heed. Let our leaders do something about the unfair distribution of wealth.
