Once upon a time I was a sales rep for a pet supply company, and one of my accounts was a tropical fish store. The owner was pretty cute, but he was engaged and I was a single mom in a long-term relationship. Fast forward nine months, and on one of my visits to his shop we got to talking, and I realized that he was no longer engaged. He also let me know that he wouldnt be there the next week because he was going skiing for his birthday. I spent hours at the Hallmark store looking for a birthday card that was friendly, but professional, and sent it to him. A few weeks later he told me how much he enjoyed the card and that none of his other reps sent him a birthday card. He asked when my birthday was, and I told him it was at the end of that week. He laughed and asked if I would let him take me out to celebrate if I didnt already have plans. I accepted, but kicked myself as I left. Although I was no longer in a relationship, I had a firm rule about not dating customers, and I did sort of already have a date. It turns out that my cute customer also had a rule about not dating women with kids, but for whatever reason, neither of us cancelled. The guy I was supposed to have a date with actually volunteered to babysit when I went out! We had a wonderful evening, and from that day on, we have been inseperable. We married within a year, and weve been together for nearly 27 years. He always tells people that he made sure it was a great date because he knew he wanted it to last forever.
