GUILT BY ASSOCIATION? Antje Antje...... PLS share and post if you agree. The longer we do rescue, sadly the more bad & illegitimate rescues we come across and learn about their ways of compromising dogs rather than doing right by them, especially in the long haul. Rescue STARTS when they exit the shelter or are taken in by other means. It is a rescues duty to stand behind their dogs through their entire life. The very elementary basics are to check out adopters (and fosters) appropriately, to spay/neuter and chip all animals which carry their name. It is a rescues DUTY to perform in-home checks and follow ups, have fosters and adopters sign legally binding and enforceable contracts, re-check fosters every 6 months, follow up on adopted dogs... Just as we re-check rescues we work with. NO EXCEPTIONS, anything less is unacceptable! If a rescue will not even follow these very basic necessities they have no business being in the business of saving dogs. DO NOT AID THEM! Some dogs are NOT better off once allegedly safe, too many get compromised week after week, dozens are stuck abandoned in shitty boarding kennels all over the country or re-dumped in shelters. IT IS ENOUGH and reputable rescues are sick and tired of having to RE-RESCUE dogs, clean up others mess. A the same time it is simply disheartening how many blindly continue too aid these people, anyone claiming to be a rescue [r] without asking questions.... To dismiss the necessity of using due diligence, overlook red-flags, demanding accountability for every dog is reckless and injudicious. It is a dis-service to any dog in need. Some of the dogs I have seen over the years would have been better off dead! For the most part, we know whos who and try to network with the responsible rescues that exhibit ethical beliefs, dedication and responsibility for the animals in their care in the long haul but it seems just as many are turning a blind eye. As annoyed as we get with the irresponsible rescues who claim they want to do good, sadly they often have supporters blindly following them like sheep, willing to go to battle for these rescuers without asking questions. Too often supporters know little or NOTHING about a rescue, yet believe a virtual strangers word the minute they drop the R bomb (the word rescue). Its a strange phenomenon I can not fathom. The internet is anonymous, it is a haven for all sorts of predators. Even a hoarder means well, but that does not mean they will do right by any dogs and stop their behaviour. WHAT IS THIS PHENOMENON? Is it a lack of intelligence? Is it just short mindedness or wishful thinking? Is it being more disconnected whilst just sitting behind a computer screen, or a lack of rescue experience, amateur naivety? Whatever it is, just think in these simple terms: Would you trust someone you met on the web or merely spoke with over the phone with your CHILD? OF COURSE NOT.... That seems completely crazy, doesnt it... Apply the same principal to dogs. Having common Facebook friends does not equate legitimacy, having chatted on the web or by phone does not either. We usually just stay away from the reckless rescuers while we continue to do the right thing, but these rescuers and their infantry of seemingly brainless sheep keep popping up all over the map and WEVE HAD ENOUGH OF THEM! I just blocked several people and I will continue to block anyone who falls in that category. The ones blindly aiding reckless and irresponsible rescues are GUILTY BY ASSOCIATION and should soon follow. If you see red flag behavior, yet you stand by and do NOTHING: You are an enabler, GUILTY BY ASSOCIATION!
