Gala Dinner Raises Funds for a Heroic Burned Boy. The Imperial Mae Ping Hotel in Chiang Mai recently hosted a gala charity dinner and dance with the theme ‘Burma in the Spotlight’. The evening was in support of The Best Friend Burmese Library, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting people from Burma, including compassionate care projects for migrants and refugees facing extreme difficulty, such as heroic Chaa Nay Choo, the 14-year old boy from Burma’s Karenni State who was seriously burned whilst attempting to save others in the tragic Mae Surin Refugee Camp fire on 22 March 2013. Over 300 guests attended the colorful event, which featured a special buffet featuring Burmese dishes, entertainers from Burma, an exhibition of Burmese handicrafts, and a keynote speech by Tin Tin Nyo, General Secretary of the Women’s League of Burma. Three students from Shan State who receive free English instruction at The Best Friend Library successfully overcame stage fright, and made first-time-ever English-language speeches in front of several hundred people, rightfully earning loud applause for their efforts. A large number of door prizes were won by lucky draws, the main item being two return airline tickets Chiang Mai – Bangkok, courtesy of Bangkok Airways, coupled with two nights’ accommodation on the Executive Floor of the Amari Watergate Hotel, Bangkok. The happy winner was Mr. Guy B. Scandlen, pictured receiving the ticket from Khun Kantima Chaiboon, Bangkok Airways Station Manager, Chiang Mai, flanked by Mr. Garrett Kostin, director of The Best Friend Library, and Ms. Ramlah Jafri, event co-organizer. A total of 232,547 Baht was raised during the gala evening, with the proceeds going towards the continuing medical treatment of Chaa Nay Choo, who being stateless, is not covered by the Thai social security system, plus others in similar need, and to fund the on-going work of The Best Friend organization. Image shows the young boy shortly after admission to the Intensive Care Burn Unit at Suan Dork Hospital, Chiang Mai, and on 31 May 2013, some ten weeks after the fire.
