Gambia at Akwaaba The Gambias high commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria has stressed the need for Africa to maximise gains in travel and tourism as well as to take advantage of the developments in the Arab World that have balanced tourism towards the continent. Presiding over the opening ceremony of the 9th Edition of Akwaaba Travel Expo 2013 in Nigeria, on behalf of The Gambias minister of Tourism and Culture, Her Excellency Angela Colley-Iheme stressed the need to diversify tourism products and improve more on service delivery mechanisms. The continent must continue to strive for peace and security in all its countries, for that is a sine qua non to sustaining and developing travel and tourism in Africa, she stressed. Commenting on the importance of Akwaaba African Travel Market, which is touted as the biggest tourism and travel fair on the continent, High Commissioner Colley-Iheme remarked that the event provides a unique opportunity to share experiences and first-hand knowledge on the myriad of issues that are confronting African tourism. In her view, the Fair also provides the congenial atmosphere to network, build partnerships and create linkages that will serve as a catalyst to boosting sales, increase the number of travelers and improve on product offerings and service delivery. It will also contribute to opening up new vistas of cooperation amongst our states within the context of sub-regional tourism and regional integration, she added. As tourism continues to be the engine of growth for many African countries, the diplomat tasked stakeholders to continue finding new and innovative ways of improving on products as well as on service delivery. She also expressed the appreciation of the Gambian delegation in taking part in the ongoing Expo. While congratulating the organisers of the Expo, she conveyed the sincere apology and greetings of The Gambias minister of Tourism and Culture for not being able to attend the opening ceremony due to some pressing state duties. The Expo that drew participants from various diverse tourism and travel businesses across the African continent, attracted thousands of visitors from over 20 countries in the region and beyond.
