Game 3: Big first quarter helps White Thunder storm to victory over the Panthers of Ashland! For years basketball fans have wondered how Magic Johnson and Oscar Robertson would match up on the court, with their great all around games and flash it would surely be a show to watch. Well, the fans got that very wish when the White Thunder of Catlettsburg clashed with the Ashland Panters this weekend in Game 3 at the APBL Memorial Fieldhouse. While Robertson and Johnson both put up good numbers in the first, 11 points for the Big O and Magic scoring 8 of his own, the Panthers were slowed down by the poor shooting of Kevin Garnett who was held down by Karl Malone. Garnett would go scoreless in the first while the Thunder would be putting up nice numbers by not only Robertson but Julius Dr. J Erving as well who had 9 points on LeBron James. This balanced attack coupled with the slow start by the aforementioned Garnett helped the White Thunder come out of the gate with an excellent period, leading 32-21 at the end of the first. The second would go a bit better for Harris team with Magic continuing to do well with 10 more points and with Dominique Wilkins coming in for a foul troubled James and scoring 8 of his own, but the Thunder rolled along behind Pete Maravich who came in off the bench and scored 13 points on just about every kind of shot one could imagine and the Thunder would lead the Panthers at the half by a score of 61-47. Once again Magic Johnson would do all he could to get the Panthers off and running, scoring the first 6 points of the half. But after a timeout, Hutchinson had his team settled down and they would stay the course behind Robertsons 13 points and Kevin Garnett continued his poor offense and at the end of three the Thunder were on their way with a lead of 91-70. The fourth quarter would prove the best one for the Ashland Panthers as they won that stanza by a score of 23-19, but it would be too little and too late as the Thunder would be the victor by a final score of 110-93. Oscar Robertson had a great game and showed his all around skills with 24 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and a steal but also impressive for the Thunder was Pete Maravich, as The Pistol scored 23 points on 10-10 shooting from the field and hitting his lone free throw as well, all done in just two periods of play. The Panthers had to be disappointed in the play of Kevin Garnett as he went 1-11 from the field but did have three blocked shots. Magic Johnson was the leader for Harris as he scored a game high 33 points to go along with six rebounds as well. LeBron James was off his game a bit, probably checking Julius Erving wore him down, but still had 20 points and 5 rebounds in the losing effort. The Thunder have a bye this week while the Panthers will be in a matchup with the Basket Brawlers out of Lexington and coached by Aaron Castle.
