Game 7s of the World Series are little miracles. They dont happen often. There has been one Game 7 in the last 10 years, that in the wild, sloppy and wonderful Cardinals-Rangers series of 2011. Before that, you had to go back to Garrett Andersons bases-loaded double and, a year before, to a broken bat hit off the Great Mariano. Game 7 is Jack Morris grinding through 10 innings and Doggie Perez unloading on a blooper pitch and Bill Mazeroski running through half of Pittsburgh to get to the plate. Game 7 is Willie Stargell hitting the big home run, Gene Tenace and Sal Bando crack back-to-back doubles and Sandy Koufax throwing unhittable pitches at the Met. The best thing about Game 7, though, is that it is Game 7, which means something unforgettable will happen. Even if the game is not close, like the Royals 11-0 victory over St. Louis, something unforgettable will happen. John Tudor will hit a rotating fan. Joaquin Andujar will lose his mind. Bret Saberhagen will jump into George Bretts arms. Something. The Kansas City Royals fans have waited since that Game 7, 29 years ago, and the San Francisco Giants fans have waited barely two years -- none of that matters now. Days rest for pitchers -- none of that matters now. Players history against another -- none of that matters now either. Game 7. Someone will be a hero. Someone will make a mistake. This is baseball magnified. This is six months of baseball boiled down and reduced to nine innings. Sometimes before such games you hear: May the best team win. Well, this is the beauty and starkness of Game 7s. The best team will win.
