Garden Tip: Are you growing beans for drying? Do not pick the beans when they are green. Wait until the pods are completely brown and the beans are hard, but harvest before the pods have split open. Harvest the pods and squeeze the beans out. The traditional way was to pull the entire plant and hang upside down until they are dry. Beans then were threshed until the seeds were released. If the beans are soft continue drying them until they fell firm. After they are dry, freeze the beans for a few hours to kill any weevils. Store the dry beans in a dry, cool, airtight container away from sunlight. It is best to use them within 6 months.
