Garden of the Week: Shrewsbury is overall winner of Britain In Bloom THE people of Shrewsbury will be celebrating after their town was named Champion Of Champions in the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain In Bloom 2014. Parks and public gardens in the town won the ultimate title in this the 50th anniversary year of Britain In Bloom, Europe’s biggest community gardening campaign. The Dingle, a flower garden created by the late Percy Thrower in the town’s main park The Quarry, particularly caught the judge’s eyes. The much-loved television gardener lived in Shrewsbury and presented BBC Gardener’s World from 1969 to 1976. Shrewsbury’s Bowbrook Allotments Community Site, with 85 organic plots plus nature trails and educational gardens to teach young people about conservation, growing fruit and vegetables and native plants, was also given a special commendation. Other excellent gardens in the town include Shrewsbury Castle, where the inside of the keep is superb horticultural hideaway. RHS Director General Sue Biggs, said: “The annual RHS Britain in Bloom awards ceremony is not about one town, village or city beating another. “It is about championing great community projects that make a difference to people’s lives. “Since it started 50 years ago, Bloom has evolved into a national campaign which is constantly growing in impact around Britain.
