Garveys Supervalu Senior County Football Championship Round 1 Ballylongford Sun 9th June 2pm Feale Rangers 1-15 Mid Kerry 0-19 A hugely satisfying win for Feale Rangers over a fancied Mid Kerry after extra time in a thrilling encounter that saw Conor Cox show his silken skills ending up with a personal tally of 10pts but his injury time point from all of 45 meters out on the sideline in normal time which sent the game into extra time was worth the entrance fee alone. Perfect conditions provided the backdrop to a high octane game at O Rahilly Park, Ballylongford that saw some marvellous free flowing football being played and with a total of 35 scores recorded it kept the good sized attendance on their toes throughout in the first game of a double header. The game itself was certainly played in fine championship spirit and with both teams so evenly matched the game was tied up on no fewer than 8 occasions. The opening half was nip and tuck Conor Cox and the impressive Gavin O’Grady, who also got on the scoring stakes for his side exchanged the opening scores inside the first 2mts. By the 15th minute it was all square at 4pts each with Cox, (2), Paudie Quill for Rangers and Gavan O’Grady, Sean O’Sullivan and Donnacha Walsh replying for Mid Kerry. Cox again put Rangers ahead but the North Kerrymen had a lucky escape when Donnacha Walsh was clear on goal in the 20th minute, but somehow Jer Kelly in the Rangers goal saved at the expense of a 45 which was sent wide of the target by Gavin O’Grady. The remainder of the half was end to end play and Sean O’Sullivan and substitute Denis Walsh exchanged points leaving the half time The second half was similar to the first half with scores hard to come-by as defences were on top; however Sean O’Sullivan kicked 2 brilliant points and after 21minutes only a point separated the sides as Rangers led with 9minutes remaining. Suddenly Mid Kerry got to grips and Gavin O’Grady with two points and a beauty from Darren O’Sullivan put Mid Kerry in the driving seat as they moved to the front by 2pts with under 3minutes left to play. Conor Cox from a free cut the deficit but in injury time it was Cox again who split the uprights from the sideline to force the game into extra time. Brendan Guiney who was now moved out field from his number 3 position was dictating the play setting up Paudie Quill for a neat point and when another second half substitute Brian Murphy pointed they moved 2pts clear. Sean O’Sullivan and Gavin O’Grady tied up the game again. Brian Murphy and Gary Sayers swopped points and all square again by the 7th minute of extra time. Anthony Maher immediately kicked a long range point but at the other end Donnacha Walsh won a good ball out on the wing transferred across goal where another substitute Aaron Cahillane fisted to the net. At this stage it looked as if the honours would go the way of Mid Kerry but once again Cox, with 2 frees had the sides on level term by the end of the first period. Feale Rangers 0-17 Mid Kerry 1-14. Cox and Brendan Whelan added points with Sean O’Sullivan getting one back for Mid Kerry and when Referee Tommy Brosnan, Crokes blew for full time it was the North Kerry side who advanced by the skin of their teeth.
