Gas giant, Santos, best known contaminating groundwater and attempting to drill for coal seam gas in the precious Pilliga forest – against the wishes of the local community – are now sponsoring the police force. In a ludicrous display, Santos have branded police cars in Queensland. This is a huge conflict of interest, and erodes the public’s ability to say no to Santos coming into their communities. Our friends at @lockthegate said it best, these companies are subject to the law, the police have to enforce the law without fear or favour and if theyre being sponsored by a company or by individuals against whom they might have to enforce that law then that compromises them immediately.
